5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor After Getting Radiology Results

Receiving radiology results before speaking with your doctor can be stressful. Here are the five most important questions to bring to your next appointment.

You Got Your Results — Now What?

Patient portals have made it possible to receive radiology results within hours of your scan — often before your doctor has had a chance to review them with you. This is convenient, but it can also be anxiety-inducing.

Here are the five most important questions to write down and bring to your follow-up appointment.

1. "What does this finding mean for me specifically?"

Radiology reports describe what the radiologist sees on the images. Your doctor interprets those findings in the context of your symptoms, medical history, and physical exam. The same finding can mean very different things in different patients.

2. "Is this finding new, or was it there before?"

Many findings — such as cysts, calcifications, and degenerative changes — are chronic (long-standing) rather than new. Comparing your current report to previous imaging can provide important context. Ask your doctor if prior studies are available for comparison.

3. "Does this finding require treatment, monitoring, or nothing at all?"

Not every finding requires action. Some findings are simply noted and monitored over time. Others require follow-up imaging, a specialist referral, or treatment. Understanding which category your finding falls into will help reduce anxiety.

4. "What symptoms should prompt me to call you before my next appointment?"

If a finding requires monitoring, ask your doctor what warning signs would indicate the situation has changed and warrants an earlier call or visit.

5. "Is there anything in this report I should share with my other doctors?"

If you see multiple specialists, make sure each one has access to your imaging reports. An incidental finding on a scan ordered by one doctor may be relevant to another.
